Early cultural awareness in Kuwait 1912-1935

Abstract

The beginnings of cultural self-awareness began to blossom, in Kuwait, through cognitive cross-fertilization with the ideas of the Islamic renaissance and Arab nationalism. This is due to Kuwait’s location on the coast of the Arabian Gulf, long decades of the communicative lifestyle of Kuwaiti society, and foreign modernization pressures, which sharpened the sense of identity, which led to acceptance of changes. In social life and the effects of civilizational development, which prevailed in neighboring regions such as Iraq, India, and the Levant, which are urban locations that were greatly influenced, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, by the civilizational tide coming from Europe
Thus, many Kuwaitis, especially captains and sailors, were influenced by modern civilization, and learned about its achievements in terms of health, educational, cultural, and transportation institutions. They felt a desire to transfer this civilization to their country. We should also not forget that some of the pioneers of renaissance and modernization in Kuwait were from families who lived, For a period of time, in places like India and Iraq, so that their children could learn, like the Al-Sudarawi family, Al-Sanea, Al-Faraj...and others, who taught their sons and daughters in Indian educational institutions, and learned about Indian culture. Therefore, when educational institutions were established in Kuwait, they contributed Some of them teach in these institutions, and we will discuss the cultural and social contributions made by the people of Kuwait to the development of the intellectual and cultural movement
